Silver Lining describes a conceptual phenomenon that causes changes to a large portion (eventually all?) of the human population on earth. It is intended as a sort of jumping-off point for a series of related stories which I may write in future. I have marked it "mature" because it includes the idea of gender changing, though there is nothing at all explicit beyond the basic idea. (I probably didn't need to, but some people are amazingly intolerant of some ideas.)

A so-far unidentified phenomenon in the form of compact clouds began to cause severe social disruptions all across the globe. From ground level, distant clouds appeared to be ordinary rain clouds, moderate gray, with occasional silvery reflections of sunlight, but instead of staying at least a thousand feet above the ground, hugged the surface. They formed without warning, generally between twenty and fourty miles across, and up close they looked like a dense fog. Views from satellites were of little use in predicting their formation because for some reason (poorly understood) they were quite transparent to all frequencies of light and radio waves; also, there appeared to be 'decoy' clouds that from the ground looked just like the active ones, though they produced none of the active ones' strange effects.
